Bird and Beckett Flyer CD Release Party at Bird & Beckett Bookstore (6/8/14)

We celebrated the release of our new CD at historic Bird & Beckett Bookstore in San Francisco, hosted by owner extraordinaire Eric Whittington. There were 2 sets, a mixture of tunes from Off The Grid and some new numbers we've been working on, such as Wrong Is Right, The Mighty Sword, Chant, and Heads in the Clouds.

New CDs pressed and available on CD Baby! (6/1/14)

DiscMakers graciously re-pressed our CD to Scott's specifications, and the update is now available on CD Baby.  There was a problem with a couple of the files digitized for iTunes distribution, but CD Baby has resolved them, so our album should be available on iTunes soon!

Off The Grid released! (5/1/14)

Our CD has been officially released! But Scott has a issue with the design on the CD itself, so we're talking to DiscMakers about a possible re-pressing. We'll keep you posted!

In Production (4/27/14)

Our CD is currently in production with DiscMakers — it should be ready in a week or two.  When it is, it will be available on CD Baby, iTunes, and all the usual places.   In the meantime, check out a bonus track from the CD, This Nearly Was Mine

Mixing and Mastering (4/8/13)

At last we made it to the mixing stage of our project!  The album was mixed by our longtime collaborator Myles Boisen at Guerrilla Recording Studios in Oakland on February 24 and March 10.  It was mastered on March 26th at Headless Buddha Mastering Lab, also by Myles.  So we now have a final mastered CD — all that remains is devising the album art and printing everything at DiscMakers.  We ended up with 12 tunes and over 80 minutes of music (the maximum length of a CD), so we had to cut one tune, which we'll be making available on the Bonus Tracks page of this web site.

Editing the Tracks (6/15/12)

How time flies!  We're still editing the tracks for our new CD — actually, we're about halfway through the process.  The following tunes have been completed:

  • Martha's Prize
  • Joshua
  • The Ballad of Johnny-Jane
  • A Remark You Made
  • Edda
  • Magnolia Triangle
Final Session at Fantasy Studios (11/12/11)

Times Three's 3rd and final recording session for their 2nd album was completed on November 12.  Once again our engineer was Adam Munoz, assisted by Brett Forest.  The session ran 4 hours, during which the following tunes were recorded:

  • Turn Out the Stars, by Bill Evans (2 takes)
  • Martha's Prize, by Cedar Walton (3 takes)
  • Joshua, by Miles Davis (2 takes)
  • The Ballad of Johnny-Jane, by Serge Gainsbourg (4 takes)
  • This Nearly Was Mine, by Richard Rodgers (1 take)
  • The Acrobat, by Larry Goldings (1 take)
  • The Meaning of the Blues, by Leah Worth/Bobby Troup  (1 take)
  • Happiness, by Cedar Walton (2 takes)
  • Never Never Land, by Jule Styne (1 take)
  • A Remark You Made, by Joe Zawinul (1 take)

The next step will be to select and edit the best takes, followed by mixing and mastering.

2nd Session at Fantasy Studios (10/22/11)

Times Three returned to the recording studio last month to continue work on their 2nd album.  Our engineer was Adam Munoz, assisted by Brett Forest.  The 4-hour session yielded the following:

Our next and final session is scheduled for November 12.

California Academy of Sciences gig (5/14/11)

Times Three will be playing at a special donor event of the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco on May 14.  The event consists of a sail on the bay, followed by a sustainable seafood dinner served at the Bay Model Visitor Center in Sausalito.  (The Bay Model is quite a story in itself — you might want to check it out here.) Unfortunately, Times Three will not be aboard the schooner for the sail, but they will provide music for the dinner to follow.

Cafe Bastille (12/15/10)

Cafe Bastille, a French restaurant in the heart of San Francisco's Financial District, has been the musical home of Times Three and friends for many years.  We recently received word that, due to the economic downturn, the music policy of live jazz has been discontinued.

1st Session at Fantasy Studios (7/11/09)

We held our first recording session for our 2nd CD on Saturday, July 11, at Fantasy Studios (home of Fantasy Records), located in the Saul Zaentz Media Center in Berkeley.  The session ran from noon to 4:00 — we recorded the following tunes:

Times Three on YouTube (2/9/09):   One of our favorite fans uploaded a tune from our recent performance at Bird & Beckett Books & Records to YouTube — click here to check it out!

Times Three's Next CD (2/1/09):   The band has recently begun planning for our next CD.  Since we're a democratic group, we each submitted a list of 10 suggestions (and a couple alternates) for the album.  After having a chance to see what each other recommended, we then submitted a revised list and began discussions to narrow the list down to about 16.  The idea was to record 8 tunes in each of two recording sessions, then select the 10 most successful recordings to mix and master for the CD.

These are all tunes which we've been playing live for some time, so naturally, our individual lists had several tunes in common.  A big focus of the group is playing tunes in odd time signatures, such as 5/4, 7/4, and sometimes combinations of different time signatures, and this really shows up in the proposed selections.  Here's the latest list for each of us, along with the composer and time signature (as we play it) of each tune:
